Florida families no longer need to leave the state for the most complex pediatric hand, nerve, and microsurgical care.

Subspecialty care for the most complex problems of a child's hand and arm
From a newborn's first weeks to a teenager's return to sport — and into adulthood — Dr. Irwin treats the full breadth of hand and upper extremity conditions, anchored by five core areas of subspecialty focus. Adults are seen as well, including those living with conditions that began at birth.
Expert care for fractures of the hand, wrist, elbow, and arm — from acute injuries and growth plate fractures to the difficult problems other surgeons see less often: malunions, nonunions, and post-traumatic deformity requiring complex reconstruction. Dr. Irwin also performs wrist arthroscopy and cares for complex wrist conditions.
Individualized reconstruction for children born with hand and arm differences — timed to growth and focused on lifelong function, independence, and confidence.
Areas — Syndactyly · Polydactyly & thumb duplication · Thumb hypoplasia & pollicization · Radial & ulnar longitudinal deficiency · Symbrachydactyly · Cleft hand · Macrodactyly · Constriction ring (amniotic band) syndrome · Camptodactyly & clinodactyly · Congenital trigger thumb · Madelung deformity · Radioulnar synostosis · Arthrogryposis
Brachial Plexus & Peripheral Nerve Surgery
Comprehensive care for the nerves that power the arm and hand — from brachial plexus birth injury and traumatic plexus injury to nerve compression, nerve laceration, and complex reconstruction in children and adults. Treatment ranges from microsurgical repair, nerve grafting, and nerve transfers to free functional muscle transfer and osteotomy when nerve recovery alone cannot restore motion. Dr. Irwin also performs upper limb reconstruction after spinal cord injury, using tendon and nerve transfers to restore pinch, grasp, and elbow extension.
Goal-directed surgery that reduces tightness and improves the position and function of the hand and arm for children and adults living with cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury. Nerve-based procedures such as hyper-selective neurectomy quiet overactive muscles at their source, while tendon transfers, lengthenings, and joint procedures rebalance the limb — easing dressing, hygiene, and grasp, and often opening goals families were told were out of reach.
Operating-microscope reconstruction of the body's smallest structures — throughout the body, not just the hand. From the upper and lower extremities to lymphedema surgery and vascular malformations, Dr. Irwin repairs nerves and vessels millimeters wide, transfers living tissue, and salvages limbs after trauma, tumors, and complex congenital problems.
Areas — Free tissue transfer · Replantation · Nerve repair · Limb salvage · Lymphedema surgery · Vascular malformations
Growing Hands, Growing Care
From first grasp to full strength.
The hand grows — and care should grow with it.
A child's hand is not a small adult hand. Growth plates, developing nerves, and years of growing still ahead change every surgical decision. Dr. Irwin's care is planned around your child's growth — timing each step so function, strength, and confidence arrive together.
